Hemagglutinin (HA) is a surface glycoprotein of the influenza A virus, particularly relevant in the H5N1 subtype. It mediates viral entry into host cells by binding to sialic acid receptors and facilitating membrane fusion. HA is a homotrimer composed of HA1 and HA2 subunits. The H5N1 subtype is notable for its high pathogenicity in birds and potential for zoonotic transmission to humans. The polybasic cleavage site is a key factor in its pathogenicity.
