Hemagglutinin Protein of Influenza A Virus Subtype H1N1 (HA)

Overview

Hemagglutinin (HA) is a major surface glycoprotein of the Influenza A virus, including the H1N1 subtype. It mediates attachment to host cells and membrane fusion, enabling viral entry. HA is the primary target for neutralizing antibodies and thus central to immune recognition and vaccine design. Each HA monomer is cleaved into HA1 (receptor binding) and HA2 (membrane fusion). Variations influence species specificity (host range) and virulence. Because it mediates attachment and entry steps, and elicits strong antibody responses, HA is a prime target for vaccines, therapeutic antibodies, and antiviral drug development.
