The hemagglutinin (HA) protein of the Influenza B-Yamagata lineage is a surface glycoprotein essential for viral entry into host respiratory epithelial cells. It binds to sialic acid receptors on host cells, initiating endocytosis and subsequent membrane fusion. HA is a major antigenic determinant, making it a primary target for neutralizing antibodies and a key component of influenza vaccines. The Yamagata lineage is antigenically distinct from the Victoria lineage, and its circulation has been significantly impacted by COVID-19 pandemic measures.
HA mediates viral entry into host cells by binding to sialic acid receptors and facilitating membrane fusion. Antibodies targeting HA can neutralize the virus by blocking these functions.
