Overview

The hematopoietic and immune systems are integrated physiological networks responsible for the production of blood cells and the defense of the body against pathogens and foreign substances (NIH, 2023). The hematopoietic system, primarily located in the bone marrow, generates all blood cell lineages, including erythrocytes, leukocytes, and platelets, through the process of hematopoiesis (StatPearls, 2023). The immune system comprises a complex array of cells, such as T cells, B cells, and macrophages, and lymphoid organs like the spleen and lymph nodes that coordinate innate and adaptive immune responses (NCBI, 2021). While many therapeutic agents target specific receptors, enzymes, or signaling pathways within these systems to treat cancers, autoimmune disorders, and inflammatory conditions, the systems themselves represent broad biological categories rather than individual molecular drug targets (Nature Reviews Drug Discovery, 2006). Dysregulation within these systems can lead to significant pathologies, including hematologic malignancies, primary immunodeficiencies, and chronic inflammatory diseases (PubMed, 2022).
