Overview

The hematopoietic and immune systems represent the integrated network of organs, tissues, and cells responsible for blood cell production and host defense (StatPearls, 2023). Hematopoiesis is the process by which hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow differentiate into erythrocytes, platelets, and various leukocytes (NIH, 2022). The immune system provides protection through innate mechanisms, such as phagocytosis and inflammation, and adaptive mechanisms involving highly specific T and B lymphocyte responses (Nature Reviews Immunology, 2021). Pathological states arising from these systems include hematologic malignancies like leukemia, as well as autoimmune diseases and primary or acquired immunodeficiencies (PubMed, 2020). Because this entry describes a physiological system rather than a discrete protein or nucleic acid, it is not considered a single therapeutic target (PubChem, 2024). However, it contains numerous specific targets such as cytokines, kinases, and cell-surface receptors that are the focus of modern pharmacology. Therapeutic intervention in these systems often requires balancing efficacy in treating disease with the risk of systemic immunosuppression or myelotoxicity.
