Overview

The hematopoietic progenitor/stem cell compartment is a collection of multipotent and self-renewing cells within the bone marrow and, during development, extramedullary tissues. Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) within this compartment possess the ability to differentiate into all mature blood cell lineages and sustain lifelong blood production. Hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPCs) are downstream, committed to specific lineages and lack extensive self-renewal. This compartment is defined and studied by cell-surface markers (such as CD34, CD133, Sca-1, c-Kit, and absence of mature lineage markers), and is essential for hematopoietic homeostasis, transplantation, and therapy for hematologic diseases.
