Overview

Stem cell replacements refer to the therapeutic use of stem cells to restore or replace damaged, diseased, or destroyed cells in the body. This approach is most commonly realized through stem cell transplantation (also known as bone marrow transplantation), where healthy stem cells are introduced into a patient to regenerate blood and immune system components. Transplanted stem cells home to damaged tissues (often bone marrow), engraft there, and begin producing new healthy blood or tissue-specific cells. They also exert effects via anti-inflammatory actions, recruitment of other reparative progenitor cells, support for tissue remodeling over scar formation, inhibition of apoptosis (cell death), and direct differentiation into needed cell types. The only widely FDA-approved application is hematopoietic/bone marrow transplantation for cancers and certain non-malignant disorders. Other uses—such as treatment for neurodegenerative diseases—are under active investigation but not yet standard clinical practice.
