Heme-binding sites are specialized structural pockets within hemoproteins that coordinate a heme prosthetic group, typically an iron-protoporphyrin IX complex. Understanding the microenvironment of the heme pocket is essential for drug design, particularly in modulating enzyme activity or gas-sensing pathways.
