Heme oxygenase (HO) is an essential enzyme responsible for the oxidative degradation of heme, a process that produces biliverdin, ferrous iron (Fe²⁺), and carbon monoxide (CO). This reaction is crucial for heme catabolism and iron recycling in the body. The enzyme exists in multiple isoforms with distinct regulatory properties and tissue distributions, including HO-1 (inducible, stress-responsive), HO-2 (constitutive, involved in gas sensing), and HO-3 (less characterized, possibly a splice variant of HO-2).
