Heme Oxygenase-1 (HO-1) induction is a critical adaptive cellular response characterized by increased expression of the HMOX1 gene, leading to elevated levels of HO-1 protein. This enzymatic process degrades heme into biliverdin, free iron, and carbon monoxide, exerting antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cytoprotective, and immunomodulatory effects. The process is primarily regulated by transcription factors like Nrf2 and Bach1, and can be triggered by various stressors including oxidative stress and inflammation. HO-1 induction has demonstrated therapeutic potential in diverse disease models but excessive or inappropriate induction may impair host defense.
