Heme oxygenase 2 (HO-2) is an enzyme that catalyzes the oxidative cleavage of heme, a process essential for heme catabolism and cellular homeostasis. HO-2 is a constitutive isoform, generally expressed at steady levels. It is highly abundant in the brain, testis, and endothelial cells, suggesting roles in neuroprotection and gas sensing. It differs from the inducible isoform HO-1. Unique structural elements such as heme regulatory motifs (HRMs) confer additional layers of regulation potentially related to redox status or gas sensing.
