Heme Polymerization

Molecular classification
Enzymatic process
01

Overview

Heme polymerization is a crucial detoxification pathway in malaria parasites (Plasmodium spp.) where toxic free heme, released during hemoglobin digestion, is converted into an inert crystalline pigment called hemozoin. This process is essential for parasite survival as free heme is highly toxic. Inhibition of heme polymerization is a validated antimalarial drug target.
