Overview

Hemodynamics refers to the study of the physical principles governing blood flow in the cardiovascular system, including how blood moves through arteries and veins, the forces that influence circulation, and the mechanics underlying pressure, flow, and resistance in blood vessels[1][3][4][5][8]. It is a key concept in cardiovascular physiology and medicine but is not itself a discrete molecular entity, receptor, enzyme, or drug target. Rather, hemodynamics encompasses several measurable parameters (such as blood pressure, cardiac output, and vascular resistance) that describe the function and health of the circulatory system[1][2][3][5][8]. Disruptions in hemodynamics are implicated in many cardiovascular diseases, but "hemodynamics" cannot be directly targeted by drugs; instead, therapies aim to correct the underlying physiological or pathological processes affecting hemodynamics[3][4][8].
