Overview

The hemostatic system is the body's coordinated set of physiological processes that halt bleeding following vascular injury and maintain vascular integrity, primarily through three overlapping stages: vasoconstriction, platelet plug formation, and coagulation (fibrin clot formation)[2][3][5]. After successful formation of a clot, wound healing proceeds and fibrinolysis dissolves the clot to restore blood flow[1][7]. The system involves the vascular endothelium, platelets, soluble and insoluble coagulation factors, and regulatory proteins, and relies on a tightly balanced interplay of pro-coagulant and anti-coagulant forces[1][5]. Dysregulation leads to bleeding disorders (e.g., hemophilia) or thrombotic conditions (e.g., deep vein thrombosis, stroke)[6][7].
