Hemostasis via modulation of coagulation pathways

Overview

Hemostasis via modulation of coagulation pathways refers to the physiological process of blood clot formation and its therapeutic regulation. This process involves a complex cascade of proteolytic enzymes, including Factor Xa and Thrombin, which work together to convert soluble fibrinogen into an insoluble fibrin mesh (StatPearls, 2023). In a healthy state, hemostasis prevents excessive blood loss following vascular injury while maintaining blood fluidity within the vessels (PubMed, 2022). Dysregulation of this system can lead to pathological conditions such as thrombosis, which causes strokes and myocardial infarctions, or bleeding disorders like hemophilia (NIH, 2021). Pharmacological modulation of these pathways is achieved through anticoagulants that inhibit specific clotting factors or procoagulants that replace deficient factors (NCBI, 2023). The primary challenge in targeting these pathways is maintaining the hemostatic balance to prevent life-threatening hemorrhage while effectively reducing the risk of clot formation (Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, 2021).
