Hemostasis via tannin-mediated protein precipitation

Molecular classification

Overview

Tannins are large polyphenolic compounds that, when applied to tissue, precipitate proteins by forming hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions with them. This precipitation can physically block bleeding by creating a protein-tannin barrier, facilitating hemostasis. The process is non-specific, targeting available proteins (such as albumin or those in blood and tissue) at the site of application. Different tannins may vary in their precipitation efficiency and mechanism—some coat proteins hydrophobically, while others cross-link proteins via hydrogen bonding. Tannin-mediated protein precipitation is used in wound care and herbal medicine but does not represent a molecular drug target in the traditional sense. The approach is associated with safety concerns including tissue irritation and potential cytotoxicity, which limits systemic therapeutic use.
