Heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor (HB-EGF) is a member of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) family. It is a multifunctional protein with significant roles in development, tissue repair, and disease processes. It acts as a potent mitogen and chemotactic agent, primarily for fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells. It binds to EGFR/ErbB1/HER1 and ErbB4/HER4 receptors and interacts with heparan sulfate proteoglycans. Membrane-bound pro-HB-EGF is also the receptor for diphtheria toxin.
HB-EGF binds to EGFR/ErbB1/HER1 and ErbB4/HER4 receptor tyrosine kinases, activating downstream signaling pathways. It also interacts with heparan sulfate proteoglycans.
