Overview

Hepatic beta-oxidation pathway enzymes are a group of proteins located in the mitochondria and peroxisomes of liver cells that catalyze the breakdown of fatty acids. These enzymes are essential for energy production, particularly during fasting or periods of high-fat intake, and play a critical role in maintaining lipid homeostasis. Key enzymes include acyl-CoA dehydrogenases, enoyl-CoA hydratases, hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenases, ketoacyl-CoA thiolases (in mitochondria), acyl-coenzyme A oxidase (ACOX1), multifunctional protein (EHHADH/MFP1), and carnitine palmitoyltransferase I (CPT I). Deficiencies in these enzymes can lead to various metabolic disorders characterized by impaired energy production and lipid accumulation.
