Hepatic Gluconeogenic Enzymes

Molecular classification

Overview

Hepatic gluconeogenic enzymes are a set of key enzymes primarily found in the liver that catalyze essential steps in gluconeogenesis, the process by which glucose is synthesized from non-carbohydrate precursors. These enzymes, including pyruvate carboxylase (PC), phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK), fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase (FBP1), and glucose-6-phosphatase (G6PC), bypass the irreversible steps of glycolysis, allowing for the net production of glucose. They are tightly regulated by hormones and allosteric effectors to maintain blood glucose homeostasis, and their dysregulation is implicated in metabolic disorders like diabetes.
