Overview

Hepatic leukemia factor pseudogene 1 (HLFP1) is a noncoding DNA sequence homologous to the hepatic leukemia factor gene but incapable of producing a functional protein[5]. Pseudogenes are generally classified as “junk DNA,” though research has revealed that a subset may play regulatory roles through their noncoding RNAs; for HLFP1, no function or disease association has been reported in the scientific literature[2]. HLFP1 is best classified strictly as a pseudogene rather than a functional molecular target and should not be used as a drug target designation. If additional functional data emerges—for example, evidence of regulatory noncoding RNA activity—a revision may be warranted, but none exists in current resources[2][5].

No specific biological function has been established for HLFP1. Generally, pseudogenes may contribute to genetic regulation via noncoding RNA mechanisms, such as acting as microRNA decoys or sources of siRNAs; however, such functions are not reported specifically for HLFP1.
