Hepatic lipogenic enzyme

Molecular classification
Enzyme, Specifically, acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), fatty acid synthase (FASN), stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 (SCD1)
01

Overview

Hepatic lipogenic enzymes are a group of enzymes responsible for catalyzing the synthesis of fatty acids and triglycerides in the liver. The most prominent members include acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), which converts acetyl-CoA to malonyl-CoA; fatty acid synthase (FASN), which elongates carbon chains to form fatty acids; and stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 (SCD1), which introduces double bonds into fatty acid chains. These enzymes are tightly regulated by transcription factors such as SREBP-1c and ChREBP, and their activities respond to hormonal signals like insulin and nutritional states. Dysregulation of hepatic lipogenesis contributes to the development of metabolic diseases including fatty liver, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. Therapeutically, these enzymes are investigated as drug targets to suppress excessive hepatic lipid production and ameliorate metabolic syndromes.
