Hepatitis B surface antigen messenger RNA (HBsAg mRNA) is the viral RNA transcript produced by the hepatitis B virus (HBV) from its S gene. The HBV genome encodes multiple mRNA species, including those that give rise to the large (L), middle (M), and small (S) forms of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), which together constitute the envelope proteins of the virus. These mRNAs are transcribed in infected hepatocytes and serve as templates for translation in the endoplasmic reticulum, after which the HBsAg proteins are processed and secreted. HBsAg mRNA is essential for viral assembly and propagation, but is not itself a therapeutic target in current clinical practice; rather, the HBsAg protein is the standard biomarker for diagnosis and monitoring of hepatitis B infection. Experimental therapies may target HBV mRNAs as part of RNA interference or antisense approaches.
