Hepatitis B virus (HBV) integrated DNA refers to fragments of the HBV genome that become inserted into the host (human) hepatocyte chromosomal DNA during infection. This integration is a hallmark of chronic HBV infection and has significant implications for viral persistence, pathogenesis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development. Although not required for viral replication, integrated HBV DNA can drive expression of HBsAg and sometimes other proteins like HBx independently of active viral replication. Integration events are strongly associated with genomic instability.
