Overview
The hepatitis B pre-S1 antigen is a domain of the large envelope protein (L-HBsAg) of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It plays a critical role in viral entry into hepatocytes and serves as an important clinical marker for HBV infection and replication. It mediates attachment to human hepatocytes via interaction with specific receptors such as the asialoglycoprotein receptor (ASGPR). Serum detection of pre-S1 antigen indicates active HBV replication. Mutations or deletions in the preS1 region can affect viral infectivity and are associated with adverse outcomes such as increased risk for hepatocellular carcinoma.
