The hepatitis B virus (HBV) particle, or Dane particle, is the infectious form of HBV. It is a ~42 nm spherical, enveloped DNA virus that infects liver cells. The envelope contains HBsAg (S, M, L proteins), surrounding an icosahedral nucleocapsid (HBcAg) containing the partially double-stranded circular DNA genome and viral polymerase. The virion functions to deliver its genome into host hepatocytes for replication. HBsAg mediates attachment to hepatocytes via NTCP receptors. Subviral particles composed only of HBsAg are also produced and act as decoys for neutralizing antibodies.
Reverse transcriptase inhibitors block viral DNA synthesis; Interferon alpha stimulates the immune system to clear the virus.
