Overview

The Hepatitis B virus (HBV) preS antigen refers to the preS domains (preS1 and preS2) found within the large envelope protein of HBV, known as hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). The preS region plays a critical role in mediating HBV attachment to hepatocytes via interaction with sodium taurocholate co-transporting polypeptide (NTCP). It also contains multiple immunogenic T-cell and B-cell epitopes, making it a target for vaccine development. Furthermore, the C-terminal portion of pre-S interacts with capsid/core proteins during virion assembly.
