Hepatitis B virus (HBV) reverse transcriptase, also known as the viral polymerase or P protein, is a multifunctional enzyme essential for HBV replication. It catalyzes the reverse transcription of pregenomic RNA (pgRNA) into relaxed circular DNA (rcDNA), a unique process among DNA viruses and central to the HBV life cycle. It possesses RNA-dependent DNA polymerization, DNA-dependent DNA polymerization, RNase H activity, and protein priming functions. It is a major target for antiviral drugs used to treat chronic hepatitis B.
