Hepatitis B virus surface antigen messenger RNA (HBsAg mRNA) is an RNA transcript produced by the hepatitis B virus (HBV) that acts as a template for the translation of the HBsAg protein. This protein is the major envelope antigen of the virus and is essential for viral assembly, infectivity, and immune recognition. Measurement of the HBsAg mRNA is used primarily in research as a proxy for active HBV transcription, whereas the HBsAg protein is a clinically established marker for hepatitis B infection[6][1]. Antiviral strategies are under development to directly target HBV RNAs, including HBsAg mRNA, to suppress HBsAg expression and modulate the course of chronic HBV infection.
