Hepatitis B virus X protein (HBx)

Target
HBx
Molecular classification
Viral protein, Regulatory protein, Transcription factor
01

Overview

The Hepatitis B virus X protein (HBx) is a multifunctional, non-structural regulatory protein encoded by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It is essential for viral replication and plays a significant role in HBV pathogenesis, including the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). HBx acts as a pleiotropic regulator affecting multiple host cellular processes, including transcriptional regulation, signal transduction, protein degradation, cell cycle regulation, and epigenetic regulation. It is found in both the cytoplasm and nucleus and is indispensable for initiating and maintaining efficient HBV replication. Due to its central role in promoting chronic infection persistence and driving oncogenic transformation of hepatocytes, it represents an attractive target for therapeutic intervention.

Safety considerations

HBx's pleiotropic effects and involvement in multiple cellular pathways make it a challenging therapeutic target. Inhibiting HBx could potentially disrupt normal cellular processes.HBx's role in immune evasion and suppression needs to be carefully considered when designing therapeutic interventions.
