Overview

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibodies, or anti-HCV, are immunoglobulins produced by the host immune system in response to HCV infection (CDC, 2023). These antibodies target specific viral antigens, including the core, E1, E2, NS3, and NS5 proteins, but they typically fail to clear the virus in chronic cases due to high viral mutation rates (WHO, 2023). In clinical settings, anti-HCV is used as a primary diagnostic biomarker to screen for past or present infection, though it cannot distinguish between the two without supplemental HCV RNA testing (StatPearls, 2023). While monoclonal antibodies have been explored as therapeutic agents to neutralize the virus by binding to the E2 glycoprotein, the Hepatitis C virus antibody itself is not a therapeutic target for drug intervention (PubMed, 2013). Instead, modern therapeutic strategies utilize direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) to inhibit viral replication by targeting enzymes such as the NS3/4A protease and NS5B polymerase (NIH, 2023). Consequently, the term is primarily relevant in the context of diagnostics and immunology rather than as a site for small molecule or biologic drug binding.
