Overview

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) antigens are viral proteins produced during HCV infection that are recognized by the host immune system. The most clinically relevant antigen is the HCV core antigen (HCV-cAg), a marker of active viral replication. Other structural proteins, such as envelope glycoproteins E1 and E2, also serve as important antigens and are targets for neutralizing antibodies. Detection of HCV antigens, particularly the core antigen, is used in diagnostics to confirm active infection and monitor treatment response.
