Hepatitis D Virion (HDV)

Target
HDV
Molecular classification
Virus, Satellite Virus, RNA Virus
01

Overview

The hepatitis D virion (HDV) is a defective RNA virus that requires hepatitis B virus (HBV) for its replication and assembly. It consists of a ribonucleoprotein core containing the viral genome and hepatitis delta antigen (HDAg), surrounded by an envelope derived from HBV surface antigens. HDV cannot replicate independently and relies on HBV for its propagation. Therefore, targeting HBV replication indirectly inhibits HDV. Bulevirtide targets NTCP to block entry of both HBV and HDV.

Mechanism of action

N/A - HDV is not a direct drug target, but drugs targeting HBV replication or entry affect it indirectly. Bulevirtide directly blocks HDV entry.
