The ORF2 protein of the hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the major capsid protein. The region spanning amino acids 368–606 covers part of the middle domain and most or all of the protruding domain, which are critical for host cell interaction and immune recognition. It is a prime target for diagnostic assays and vaccine development efforts due to the presence of neutralizing B-cell epitopes.
