Hepatocellular carcinoma, down-regulated 1 (HEPN1) is a short peptide encoded by the HEPN1 gene, mainly expressed in the liver. HEPN1 appears to function as a growth suppressor: its expression inhibits cell growth and promotes apoptosis in liver cancer cells. In hepatocellular carcinoma, HEPN1 expression is frequently lost or substantially reduced, implicating it as a putative tumor suppressor and suggesting that its silencing may play a role in liver cancer development. The gene is located in the 3'-noncoding region of HEPACAM, on the antisense strand. It does not belong to any major drug-targeted molecular family and is currently not regarded as a direct therapeutic target.
