Hepatocellular carcinoma associated transcript 5 (HCCAT5)

Target
HCCAT5
Molecular classification
Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), Antisense RNA
01

Overview

Hepatocellular carcinoma associated transcript 5 (HCCAT5) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) that is selectively overexpressed in certain cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma and gastric cancer. It is classified as an antisense lncRNA and is located on chromosome 16. HCCAT5 is not expressed in normal tissues, with specific upregulation in tumors, suggesting a role in cancer cell proliferation and survival. Knockdown studies in liver cancer cell lines indicate that reducing HCCAT5 expression impairs growth and induces apoptosis, underlining its potential as a cancer biomarker and as a novel molecular target for cancer diagnostics and therapy. No current drugs are known to target HCCAT5 directly, but its tumor-specific expression profile marks it as a compelling candidate for further research in oncology.

Mechanism of action

Not directly characterized, but knockdown experiments suggest that downregulation of HCCAT5: - Reduces cancer cell proliferation - May affect apoptosis pathways

03

Biological functions

Regulation of cell proliferationModulation of apoptosisPotential involvement in tumor cell viability
04

Disease associations

Cancer (notably hepatocellular carcinoma and gastric cancer)Reported low expression in normal tissues, suggesting specificity for malignant contexts
05

Safety considerations

As an RNA target, safety would depend on the delivery and specificity of therapeutic interventionNo specific clinical safety data reported; potential for off-target effects is theoretical
06

Biomarkers

Potential prognostic/diagnostic biomarker for gastric cancerPotential marker for hepatocellular carcinoma and other tumors where it is overexpressed
