Hepatocellular carcinoma cells recognized by central memory T cells refers to a cellular interaction model in immuno-oncology rather than a discrete molecular target. Central memory T cells (Tcm) are a specialized subset of T lymphocytes characterized by the expression of CD45RO, CCR7, and CD62L, which allow them to home to secondary lymphoid organs and maintain high proliferative potential (Sallusto et al., 1999, Nature). In the context of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), Tcm cells are considered a superior vehicle for adoptive cell therapies, such as CAR-T or TCR-T, because they provide more persistent anti-tumor activity and better engraftment compared to effector memory T cells (Liu et al., 2020, Journal of Hematology & Oncology). These cells recognize HCC through the presentation of specific surface antigens or MHC-peptide complexes, most notably Glypican-3 (GPC3), which is highly expressed in HCC but absent in healthy liver tissue (Gao et al., 2014, Hepatology). Consequently, while the phrase describes a therapeutic mechanism of action involving the recognition of malignant cells by long-lived memory lymphocytes, it does not identify a single receptor or enzyme, but rather a complex immunological process.
