This system is crucial for maintaining enterohepatic circulation, facilitating lipid digestion, and regulating cholesterol homeostasis. Key transporters include NTCP (SLC10A1) for sodium-dependent uptake, OATPs (SLCO family) for sodium-independent uptake, and BSEP (ABCB11) for ATP-dependent export into bile. Dysregulation of this system can lead to cholestasis and liver injury.
