Hepatocyte cell membrane stabilization is a pharmacological effect characterized by the maintenance of the structural and functional integrity of the liver cell's plasma membrane (Loguercio & Festi, 2011, World Journal of Gastroenterology). This process involves the protection of the lipid bilayer against oxidative damage, particularly lipid peroxidation, and the modulation of membrane fluidity to prevent the leakage of intracellular components (StatPearls: Silymarin, 2023). It is a key mechanism for hepatoprotective agents, such as silymarin, which alter the membrane structure to block the entry of hepatotoxins like alpha-amanitin (PubChem: Silybin). By preserving membrane integrity, this effect helps maintain cellular homeostasis and prevents the elevation of serum liver enzymes such as ALT and AST (NIH: Liver Function Tests). Although clinically significant in treating various liver disorders, it represents a complex physiological outcome involving multiple molecular pathways rather than a single discrete molecular target.
