Overview

This is not a discrete molecular target but rather a general term describing the collective enzymatic activity of hepatocytes (liver cells). It represents a functional measurement rather than a specific receptor, enzyme, or protein that can be therapeutically targeted. Hepatocyte enzyme activity refers to the collective enzymatic functions performed by hepatocytes, the primary functional cells of the liver that comprise approximately 80% of liver mass. This is a functional measurement rather than a specific molecular target. Hepatocytes express numerous enzymes involved in critical metabolic processes including protein synthesis, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, gluconeogenesis, and xenobiotic biotransformation. The activity of these enzymes is commonly assessed through serum markers such as ALT, AST, ALP, and GGT to evaluate liver health and detect hepatocellular injury. These "liver function tests" are actually measurements of enzyme leakage from damaged hepatocytes rather than true functional assessments. Hepatocyte enzyme expression shows zonal variation within liver lobules, with cytochrome P450 enzymes predominantly located in zone 3 hepatocytes surrounding central veins. This term should not be considered a therapeutic target but rather a diagnostic and monitoring parameter in liver disease. Although not a target, hepatocyte enzymes metabolize numerous drugs through CYP1A2, CYP2B6, CYP2C9, CYP2C8, CYP2C19, and CYP3A4 pathways.
