Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), also known as scatter factor (SF), is a pleiotropic, paracrine cellular growth factor primarily secreted by mesenchymal stromal cells. It acts on a variety of target cells and is best known for its roles in embryonic organ development, adult organ regeneration, wound healing, angiogenesis, and tumorigenesis. HGF binds to the c-Met receptor tyrosine kinase, triggering downstream signaling cascades that promote cell proliferation, motility, and morphogenesis. It is implicated in cancer progression and metastasis but also shows promise in tissue regeneration therapies.
