Hepsin

Molecular classification
Type II transmembrane serine protease, Enzyme
01

Overview

Hepsin, also known as TMPRSS1, is a type II transmembrane serine protease primarily expressed in the liver, but also found in other tissues like the kidney, lung, and adipose tissue. It plays a crucial role in physiological homeostasis and is implicated in cancer progression and metabolic regulation. It activates growth factors like HGF and MST1, modulates adipocyte differentiation, and affects urinary protein processing. Hepsin is overexpressed in some cancers, particularly prostate cancer, making it a potential biomarker.
