Overview

The hERG potassium channel (KCNH2) is a voltage-gated potassium channel essential for cardiac repolarization and maintaining normal heart rhythm. It is also expressed in nerve cells and microglia within the central nervous system. Mutations or pharmacological inhibition can cause long QT syndrome, leading to arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. Many drugs inadvertently block this channel, making it a key anti-target during drug development.
