Viral glycoprotein, Envelope protein

Overview

Herpes simplex virus glycoprotein D (gD) is an essential envelope protein found in both HSV-1 and HSV-2. It plays a critical role in viral entry into host cells by mediating the initial interaction between the virus and specific cellular receptors on the host cell surface. Upon binding to one of these receptors, gD undergoes conformational changes that trigger downstream interactions with other viral glycoproteins—specifically gB and the gH/gL complex—culminating in fusion of the viral envelope with the host cell membrane and subsequent entry of viral genetic material.
