Overview

Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) antigens are viral proteins recognized by the host immune system during infection. These include a variety of structural and nonstructural proteins, with surface glycoproteins being particularly important for immune recognition, viral entry, and vaccine development. Key antigens include Glycoprotein D (gD), Glycoprotein B (gB), and the Glycoprotein H/L complex (gH/gL). These antigens play roles in viral attachment, membrane fusion, and modulation of host immunity. The immune response targets these antigens, particularly glycoproteins, in neutralizing antibody responses. Live-virus exposure generates broader humoral responses than single-antigen subunit approaches. Surface-exposed glycoproteins mediate both pathogenesis (entry/fusion) and immune evasion/modulation.

Mechanism of action

These drugs inhibit viral DNA polymerase, thereby blocking viral replication. They don't directly target the antigens themselves, but reduce viral load and antigen presentation.
