HERV-H LTR-associating protein 1 (HHLA1) is a B7 family member functioning as an immunomodulatory protein with both costimulatory and coinhibitory effects on T cell activity. The protein is encoded by the HHLA1 gene on human chromosome 8 and is expressed in several tissues. HHLA1 plays a role in regulating immune responses and is implicated in tumor immune evasion, making it a candidate therapeutic target in cancer immunotherapy. The gene has a number of aliases and is not classically classified as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter, though it is related to the immune system through ligand/receptor interactions typical of checkpoint molecules.
