It is not a single molecule, protein, receptor, or gene, but rather describes a mode of interaction between different classes or types of cells—such as between different neuronal or cardiac cell types—enabling signaling and coordination in tissues[1][2][3]. In the retina, for example, heterocellular coupling may occur between amacrine cells and ganglion cells via gap junctions, facilitating communication between cell superclasses with distinctly different morphologies[1]. Similarly, in the heart, heterocellular coupling underlies complex multicellular integration among the diverse constituents of cardiac tissue[3].
