Overview

Heterocellular coupling refers to the general phenomenon of intercellular communication, specifically the metabolic or electrical coupling between distinct cell types via structures such as gap junctions. It is not a single molecule, protein, receptor, or gene, but rather describes a mode of interaction between different classes or types of cells—such as between different neuronal or cardiac cell types—enabling signaling and coordination in tissues[1][2][3]. In the retina, for example, heterocellular coupling may occur between amacrine cells and ganglion cells via gap junctions, facilitating communication between cell superclasses with distinctly different morphologies[1]. Similarly, in the heart, heterocellular coupling underlies complex multicellular integration among the diverse constituents of cardiac tissue[3]. Heterocellular coupling, therefore, is a biological process or structural arrangement, not a discrete therapeutic target.
