Overview

Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein A1 pseudogene 40 (HNRNPA1P40) is a pseudogene of the HNRNPA1 gene, which means it resembles the protein-coding gene HNRNPA1 but lacks the capability to code for a functional protein. Pseudogenes are often non-functional genomic sequences derived from functional genes, the products of duplication or retrotransposition, and may sometimes have regulatory RNA roles but typically do not produce active proteins. There is no evidence that HNRNPA1P40 serves as a drug target, a biomarker, or plays documented roles in disease or therapeutic safety. HNRNPA1P40 should not be confused with HNRNPA1, which is a well-characterized RNA-binding protein involved in RNA metabolism, transcription, splicing, and disease mechanisms, notably in cancer and neurodegeneration. The functional HNRNPA1 protein is a member of the hnRNP A/B family and has been studied as both a disease mediator and, rarely, a therapeutic target, but the pseudogene HNRNPA1P40 itself does not have these functions. If a true therapeutic target is sought, the correct entry would be heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein A1 (HNRNPA1), not HNRNPA1P40.
