Overview

Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein C pseudogene 7 (HNRNPCP7) is a processed pseudogene, meaning it is a nonfunctional copy of the parental gene (HNRNPC) that was generated by retrotransposition and that typically lacks introns and regulatory regions[9][7]. Pseudogenes such as HNRNPCP7 do not encode functional proteins and are generally not expressed. They accumulate mutations and sequence disruptions, and are not considered typical therapeutic targets, such as receptors or enzymes[9]. While many pseudogenes have long been considered functionless, new research suggests that some can exert regulatory effects by influencing chromatin structure or competing for binding with microRNAs or RNA-binding proteins[7]. However, there is no evidence that HNRNPCP7 is involved in such functions, nor does it serve as a biomarker or drug target at this time[1][5][9]. The functional parental gene, HNRNPC, plays a known role in RNA binding and processing, but the pseudogene HNRNPCP7 does not share these activities[8][4][6].
