Overview

Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein R is an RNA-binding protein encoded by the HNRNPR gene, member of the hnRNP family, primarily localized in the nucleus but also involved in transporting specific mRNAs (notably β-actin mRNA) to axons in neurons[1][7]. It contains three RNA recognition motif (RRM) domains and a nuclear localization signal, binds to heterogeneous nuclear RNA (hnRNA), and is essential for the regulation of mRNA processing, axonal growth, and neuronal differentiation[1][7]. HNRNPR interacts with proteins including SMN1, PRMT1, TDP-43, and FUS/TLS, many of which are implicated in disorders like ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases[1][7]. Although not a primary drug target or biomarker, altered regulation or mutation of HNRNPR and its partners is associated with neurodegenerative pathology and emerging evidence suggests possible roles in cancer[2][4][7].
