Overview

Hexaxim bacterial and viral vaccine antigens comprise a combination of immunogenic substances designed to provide active immunity against six major pediatric infectious diseases. The bacterial components include purified diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, acellular pertussis antigens (pertussis toxoid and filamentous haemagglutinin), and the Haemophilus influenzae type b capsular polysaccharide conjugated to a tetanus protein carrier (EMA, 2023). The viral components consist of the hepatitis B surface antigen produced by recombinant DNA technology and inactivated poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3 (Sanofi, 2024). These antigens function by mimicking a natural infection to stimulate the production of specific antibodies and the development of memory B and T cells without causing the associated diseases (WHO, 2022). This hexavalent approach allows for simultaneous protection against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B, poliomyelitis, and invasive Hib infections, significantly reducing the number of injections required for infants. Clinical efficacy is typically monitored through seroconversion rates and the maintenance of protective antibody titers against each of the six components (PubMed, 2021).
